Bad Press

Staten Island is the butt of many jokes in NYC and even outside the city.  During the course of our interviews, we came to realize not everyone on Staten Island is aware of how much the Island is made fun of.

This page will be a collection of news items and personal accounts of such items.  At the bottom of the page, there is a submission form for you to send us your stories.

Last week I was in line for Pinstripes in the Park.  I spoke with the couple standing behind me for a moment.  They heard my accent.  Minutes later, the female in the couple, told a story to her friend about how she used to lend out her ID to her younger friend and how it always embarrassed her when she did.  Why?  Because her friend had 'that God awful Staten Island accent!'  And now all the bouncers saw her name on the ID but heard her friend's accent.

Meanwhile, I have the Staten Island accent, spoke to this person and she didn't realize she was standing behind an Islander.  Does she really even not know what our accent sounds like, is she exaggerating her friend's accent, or did she just not realize she was in the middle of NYC and was near other Staten Islanders?  (She was from Long Island, by the way.)

This is only the latest I personally heard. If you pay attention, you will experience comments like this everyday when you are in the city.  People in the other four boroughs and other section of New York and New Jersey are relentless when it comes to making fun of Staten Island.

Below please share your thoughts insults you have heard and on  boycotts, or tell us about other companies, people or experiences you have had/seen/overheard off the Island that insulted Staten Island.

[Comments may be included in the film, you may send or withhold your name as you wish]

"He said, 'Well, what do you expect, look where they come from,'"related McMahon. "Why would he say that about Staten Island? Here we have a police officer who just gave his life in the line of duty who lived on Staten Island. It was like he was typecasting Staten Island. He obviously has a very low opinion of Staten Island. I was very offended."

It Never Ends!

Today I was on the search to see if the Staten Island Ferry really is the #3 tourist attraction in NYC.  And I found this..

Overrated New York Tourist Destinations from Trip Advisor.com

The Circle Line is a much better way to sightsee around the island of Manhattan. And once the trip is over you're in…Staten Island.

PS Times Square was #1

After a day on Staten Island, going the city's only 4th of July parade and watching the SIYanks beat the Brooklyn Cyclones by stealing home in the bottom of the 11th inning, we came home to this email.

"I have been to 48 states and overseas, and NO WHERE have I met more uneducated, uncultured, and truly sheltered people than in Staten Island.

Reading this website, you CLEARLY have never traveled or lived anywhere else if you defend Staten Island.

It's a great place if you are a cop, firefighter, garbage-collector, mobster, or a mall-rat but for anyone who ever went to college, has a career, or travels it makes a trailer-park in Alabama look like Harvard.

You really are clueless......"
