Save Staten Island began to document what people thought about the negative stereotypes of Staten Island in the fall of 2006.  The intention was to have a documentary ready within one year.

Instead, the response to the project was more than we could have hoped for, and with that came new complications to consider.

We are now well past the one year anniversary of the project start and we are still being contacted by people interested in Saving Staten Island.  Since the main goal of this project was to break negative stereotypes and help improve the self esteem of this Island, we are taking the project in a new direction for 2008.

Although we will still be editing the hundred of hours of footage we have from 2007, we want the project to expand beyond the initial concept and open the doors to other individuals to do their part in Saving the Island.

Saving Staten Island means something different to everyone.  The Island is filled with diversity, culture and people who are willing step up and take action.  In 2008, we want to give you that opportunity.

The Very Nice People Society will be putting together STATEN ISLAND 2008.  This will be a yearbook/scrapbook/time capsule of the Island documenting the people who lived here and cared about it in 2008.

Beginning January 1, 2008, everyone on Staten Island and those who have a strong connection to the Island, are invited to participate in this project. The yearbook will be an actual book laid out the way a scrapbook or school year book would be.

We invite you to send in items such as pictures, writings, drawing, group photos, photos of families, blog entries about Staten Island in 2008, almost anything thing you can come up with that could be put into our format, will be accepted.  Anything too big to fit on a page can be photographed to be included in the project.  All items must be your original work and not copyrighted.

We would especially like photos and write ups of events planned by Staten Islanders that were conducted in the hopes of Saving Staten Island.  The ideas are broad and left open your imagination.  We are willing to discuss any and all ideas you have to make sure they will fit the format we have in mind.

Items submitted may not be offensive in nature, discriminatory or inappropriate for an audience of all ages.  Details about terms and condition will be available in early January.

All entries will be received by mail only and will become the property of the Very Nice People Society.  Your originals will be placed directly into the yearbook.

More details on this project plus submission forms and our PO Box will be coming shortly.  For now, please help us pass the word on this project.

We Were Quoted in the Advance

Mary Ellen Rozak, 35, and her brother, Nick, 22, founders of SaveStatenIsland.com
"We're partially to blame [for the stereotypes] because we do some of the stuff that we say they do, though sometimes there's real reasons behind it," Mary Ellen said. "We sometimes isolate ourselves. One person did tell us that we seem to lack pride in ourselves, and that every time someone knocks Staten Island we say, 'Yes, you're right.' But there's got to be something said for the fact that when you look at crime rates in the city and problems in schools, we always come out on top. ... We're showing people that there's more to the Island, and that some of us have a lot of pride and we're trying to do something. Maybe the rest of the city will start to see that there's something great over here."

I am upset they didn't put my picture up and call to wish us a happy one year anniversary of this site, since I mention them all them time.

A quiz has started a hot debate!

We could make this stuff up if we tried!

The time was 6:44 pm, Thursday July 26, 2007.  I was in Duane Reade on Forest Avenue looking for nail polish remover.  Off to the left, near the aisle furthest from the door, it caught my eye, a rack of t-shirts!  Since when does Duane Reade sell t-shirts?

I am so glad I went over to see what they were.  To my surprise, I saw shirts with Staten Island written on them.  It was a tourist kind of rack for Staten Island.  Because so many tourists stop by Duane Reade in the middle of Forest Avenue???

Then I saw it…..the shirt of all shirts. It had written on it, ‘Staten Island, New Jersey’!

Did we get traded?
